DIA Sketch design competition – Big Brother House

The Dundee Institute of Architects support an annual sketch design competition for students at Dundee School of Architecture. The brief this year was for a ‘big brother house’. My entry placed third.

The design was based around a childlike profile of a house. This formed a pit, like the centre of an arena, for the contestants to inhabit. The space was primarily external with shelters against the perimeter. The necessary saddism for a big brother house including out door showers. Entry to the space was up and over the edge through the ‘gate’ tower so as to maintain the apparent impenetrability of the boundary.

The graphics adorning the boundary are based around the big brother themes (voyeurism, commercialsation of experience, totalitarianism …) including the poster from 1984, a bikini clad model and photographer, mickey mouse, an eye … these are set against natural backdrops over layed with ornate fencing patterns.
