Charles Rennie Mackintosh Chair Competition

This bench , pictures above as exhibited in the Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, was designed as a response to the watercolours of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The design was the result of a one week team design competition. The team made up of Paul Calder (second year architecture), Ross Galloway (second year architecture), Lesley Herd (second year interior design) and myself (4th year group leader) designed and built the bench over a 5 day period.
We were inspired by the layouring in some of the watercolours’ depiction of waves. The idea of detail vs. extension and the use of colour also comes from Mackintosh. The final form is also very much a result of the materials we had to hand: the cardboard tubing coming from one student’s father’s factory.
