balmerino retreat – 3rd year

The design for the retreat centre in Balmarino, Fife, was investigating themes of buildings in the landscape.

The above section, drawn by cutting into the surface of corrugated card, was created as part of a university competition. As one of the winners of the competition the school funded my trip to the Material Matters Conference at the University of London.

The design was based around three different moves: 1. a journey line cut into the landscape and marked by a wall; 2. a circular  area as marked by moulding the ground into ridges and 3. a lightweight more temporary structure raised above the ground to house the more mundane elements of the brief.
