material matters : sense

material matters

I was able to attend the 2004 ‘Material Matters’ workshops and symposium at the University of East London thanks to the support of Dundee School of Architecture.  I won the opportunity through a drawing competition held within the school.

I spent 5 days with a workshop titled ’sense’ led by Heidi Svenningsen & Cathy Hawley from MUF art/architecure. We were interested in the role of decoration and inhabitation in architecture and as a response to this we created a mural.

Using lino cuts we printed the word subjective onto the studio walls at UEL so that it could only be clearly read from one position. The word was set within a field of prints based on the daydreams of the occupants of the space. We added extras using biros in an attempt to de-sanctify the work and encourage students to re-appropriate it.
